A Clinical Study to Evaluate Efficacy of Lavanbhaskar Churna on Urdhwaga Amplapitta W.S.R. to Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Abstract: Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a common gastroenterological problem, multifactorial in nature. Individuals’ well beings are affected by various complications as results of reflux of stomach contents. Due to upward movement of undigested food materials, it is also called as Urdhwaga Amlapitta in Ayurveda.
Materials and Methods: In a pre-post treatment study design, lavanbhaskar churna was clinically evaluated on 23 patients between age of 18 to 64 years. Patients were having history heartburn in retrosternal area of chest. They were evaluated based on questionnaires of GERS Q, GOS and FSSG.
Result: Statistically significant result was observed at 95% confidence interval using Wilcoxon Signed Ran Test in all three evaluation criteria.
Discussion: Sodium chloride being the greater part of the formulation is responsible for decreased transient lower sphincter relations and increased propulsive motility. It also reduces colonic fermentation by altering the gut microbiota. Flavonoids present with multiple herbal components decrease gastric acid and lipid peroxidation. Eugenol have gastroprotective properties.
Conclusion: The conditions of GERD improved using lavanabhaskar churna. Detailed study with based on compounds or synergistic effects of compounds of component drugs are required.
