Abstract: Background: Interactions of herbal drugs with other medicaments, diet and dietary supplement have become challenge for healthcare practitioners with limited updated knowledge. Various researches have highlighted the altered pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in co-administered drugs or drugs with other herbs or diets depending upon the composition and mechanism of actions. Both potentiating and inhibitory actions are reported. Clinicians able to understand such interactions in terms of pharmacological effects are able to take better decision in favour of patients as green tea is shown to increase the simvastatin concentration due to glycoprotein-p inhibition. So, present study is based on interactions of two frequently used herbal drugs in Ayurveda.
2: Ashwagandha: It is frequently prescribed herb in single or combined forms in Ayurveda for general debility, inflammations, bronchitis and others. The researches have shown the effects of Ashwagandha increasing the concentrations of triiodothyronine and thyroxine levels, so it affects the potential therapeutic effects of medicines in hyperthyroidism. Its interactions with medicines used for inhibition of platelet aggregation are also reported.
3. Yashtimadhu: It another important herb used in good number of Ayurvedic formulation. An experiment on rats shows synergistic effects of combination of hydro-alcoholic extract of Yashtimadhu with sesame oil. Its interactions with warfarin and aspirin have also been shown working synergistically. It is also contradictory with antihypertensive drugs as it causes sodium retention leading to hypertension and edema.
4. Conclusion: A perfect discernment of conditions lying with patients is important before prescribing any medicine as various interactions of medicines with other herbs, drugs and diet may interfere with the treatment and potency of medicines. Both Ashwagandha and Yastimadhu have been shown with different types of interactions with other herbs and drugs through various types of experiments.
