Abstract: Background: Stachytarpheta indica is known medicinal plant of Siddha, used in fever, inflammation, diarrhea and dysentery. Iridioid glycosides, present in both stem and leaves are proven antimicrobial agent.
Materials and Methods: The macroscopical and microscopical studies were done. Physico-chemical analysis included ash values, extractive values and pH. Preliminary phytochemcial tests were for various extracts. Flourescence tests were sone using different chemicals to observe the flourescence. Thin layer chromatopgraphy was done using solvent system chloroform and methanol for both methanol and ethyl acetate extracts.
Result: Macroscopical studies revealed the bitter, astringent taste with short and fibrous fracture. The mirscopical study of stem exhibited patches of sclerenchyma fibers in periphery of vascular bundles. Uniseriate medullary rays filled with starch grains was present. Total ash was noted as 8.29% while water soluble extractives were 19.58%. The preliminary phytochemical tests revealed absent of alkaloid in aqueous extract while present in methanol and ethyl acetate extracts. Five spots were observed in thin layer chromatophraphy of both methanol and ethyl acetate extracts.
Conclusion: This study is preliminary phytochemical study of stem of undertaken plants with more attention on microscopical studies.
