Hypertension and Ayurvedic Perspectives

Abstract: Background: “Not all the conditions are treatable by everyone”, some of the conditions should be managed properly. These kind of diseases are called Yapya rogas in Ayurveda, which are difficult to treat. Hypertension is one such Gudalinga Vyadhi, which do not have any reference in Ayurveda literature. Hampering of functioning of the dosha and dhatus results in Hypertension.
Materials and Methods: Screening and analysis of research papers, texts and other literary materials from Ayurveda and modern medical science on hypertension.
Role of Tridosha in Hypertension: Vyana vayu and Prana vayu control is responsible systolic control of blood pressure while diastolic component is connected Kapha dosha.
Etiological and Risk factors of Hypertension: The risk factors include lack of physical activity, excess alcohol consumption, smoking, overweight, high sodium/salt intake, processed and fatty foods, stress, family history etc.
Pathology of Essential Hypertension: Other than Tridosha, Agni also plays important role in pathology of hypertension as any disequilibrium in agni will result in formation of Ama leaving impacts on blood pressure.
Samprapthi or the Pathophysiology: Vitiation of Tridosha is important, but the symptoms manifested depends upon the predominance of vitiation of specific dosha. .
Challenges in Effective Management of Hypertension: The biggest challenge of hypertension lies with its detection, complex mechanism and difficulty in standard samprapti vighatana.
Conclusion: Hypertension is a Gudalinga avyakta vyadhi (a disease with hidden features or masked symptoms), or it is aptly termed as silent killer. Vigorous researches are needed from ayurvedic perspectives to achieve generalized pathology and samprapti vighatana.
