Abstract: Background:Spermacoce ocymoides is one of the common plants of South India, frequently growing as weed after rainy season. The antimicrobial properties of various parts of the plant has been shown. Pharmacognostical studies on stem of this plant is not done properly.
Materials and Methods: The detailed anatomical studies of stem of this plant was done with photomicrographs. Qualitative tests for primary and secondary metabolites using aqueous and methanol extracts were done. The quantitative estimation of total flavonoids and total phenols were done using UV-Visbile spectrophotometer.
Result: The anatomical studies revealed different types of uniserite, unicellular and bicellular trichomes enveloping the stem. Needle-shaped crystals of calcium oxalate were observed in pith. Starch grains were noted in parenchyma cells, abundantly in pith region. Scalariform vessels and tracheids with bordered pitted wall were seen. Alkaloids, flavonoids and various other metabolites were found positively present in different extracts of stem.
Discussion and Conclusion: A detailed study on the structure of various compounds present in plant is needed. Biological assay in details will make stem as prominent drugs as total phenols and total flavonoids were respectively noted as 7.56 mg/g and 3.2 mg/ g.
