A Review Study on Potential Effects of Chanting of Om/Aum, Maharityunjay Mantra and Gayatri Mantra

Abstract: Background: “Indian culture specifically Mantras and their effects have always attracted the world’s scientific groups. Number of researches showing the positive effects on various parts of brain have been published. Still, researches specific to individual mantra is not studied. Present study is an effort to review the studies founded on individual mantra like chanting of Om/Aum, Mahamrityunjay Mantra and Gayatri Mantra.
Materials and Methods: According to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria, PubMed databased and Cochrane library database for searched to find out the health related effects of selected Mantras.
Result: Total 616 records were retrieved. 3 were duplicate. 616 records were screened. 466 were found irrelevant, so they were excluded from the study. 140 were found no mentioning of Om/Aum, Gayatri Mantra and Mahamrityunja Mantra. 10 were studied in details.
Discussion: The effects in common for these three Mantras was on nervous system. Anxiety, calming effects, self-awareness etc. were noted. Mechanisms of action were not found. fMRI and EEG reports exposed the activation of various parts of brain related to congnition and memory. Various other records detail about the changes also depend upon the experience of meditators. Skilled meditators have shown better results.
Conclusion: Chanting of all these mantras have effects on brain and through brain to other parts of the body. Upregulation of CYP19A1 was seen with Mahamriyunjay mantra. More studies with larger number of subjects are required to understand the mechanism of effects for various vedic mantra on specific parts of the body.
