Abstract: Background: Rhinitis is a common heterogeneous disorder with three main phenotypes of rhinitis, allergic, infectious and non-allergic non-infectious. Non-allergic rhinitis is group of chronic rhinitis including drug-induced rhinitis, hormone-induced rhinitis, senile rhinitis, gustatory rhinitis, occupational rhinitis, idiopathic rhinitis and atrophic rhinitis. Atrophic rhinitis is a chronic condition characterized by symptoms of nasal crusting, purulent discharge, nasal obstruction, and halitosis. According to similarities of symptoms, in Ayurveda, it can be correlated with Vataja Pratishyaya. Nasya is prescribed in problems generated due to Vata in head, neck and shoulder. Milder form of Nasya is used to maintain health of nasal passage. Anutaila Pratimarsha Nasya was selected for the study.
Materials and Methods: Undertaken study is pre-post study design based on symptoms. The Pratimarsha nasya was given thrice a day at dose of one drop in each nostril for one month. Symptomatic reliefs were noted based on grading. Follow up was done 28th day. Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test using SPSS was used for statistical analysis.
Result: Differences in mean of before treatment and after one month of treatment were apparent for all taken symptoms including nasal blockage, ansomia, crusting at primary level, dryness of nose, nasal discharge and headache.
Discussion and Conclusion: Nasya is suggested in Vataja Pratishyaya as the nasal respiratory mucosa is important for systemic drug delivery and is composed of epithelium, basement membrane and lamina propria. Anutaila is lipid-based drug as Tila Taila is vehicle. Lipid-based drugs increase the bioavailability and site-based delivery. So, results were noted positively.
