EDITORIAL – JANUARY

Psychological concerns of pandemic were carefully weighed by researchers from various aspects. The study of McClelland and Silwa (2022) about the unequal domestic labour based on gendered affordable perception was published on 14th November issue of Philosophy and Phenomenological Research. The feminist concern is emphasized in study as care of children, cleaning and related domestic works. Authors have discussed difference in perception of men and women in terms of possibility of action (affordance). Subjective approach of affordance is known fact. The cognitive perception is shaped by economic status, society, cultural and religious beliefs. It is much affected by environmental set up of nurturing. Habits and skills are unconsciously developed under specific environs.

Responsibilities to take care of children and passing tradition are given to women in almost all the religion. Other obligations used to change with time, region and religion. Sanatan dharma and Judaism have given comparatively more importance to equality between women and men in their original religious texts as Taitriya Samhita mentions man and woman as two bulls of a chariot. Still motherhood of women is emphasized everywhere. Such importance to motherhood, psychology prepares or pressurizes women to take responsibility of children. It is also affected by economic status as in economically higher societies, for every single work, separate worker is present. A girl child grown with such facility will have different psyche.

Diversified researches have the shown the more warmth, gregariousness and positive emotions in women than men. This also makes women more sensitive about the presentation to family members, relatives and friends. Traditionally, domestic works are related to women, so they set their psychology accordingly. Apart from this, more sensitivity towards cleanliness is taught as physiological need for women from adolescent age due to menstrual cycle. So, women psychologically become more sensitive towards cleanliness.

Various other factors may work to set a psyche towards more inclination to domestic works, if studied with reference to socio-economic status and from religion points of view.
