Abstract: Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is an overuse injury usually observed in athletes, rickshaw-pullers, farm-workers etc. Thickening and inflammation of iliotibial band causes pain in lateral femoral condyle or sometimes in hip too. Number of medication techniques are used for treatment including pain-killers, physiotherapy, massage etc. The clinical evaluation of massage with medicated mentioned in Ayurvedic texts is not done in details.
Materials and Methods: The formulation was prepared in in pharmacy of Ashwini Ayurvedic Medical College & Research Centre (AAMC&RC), Tumkuru. 26 patients were taken in pre-post-study design of age between 18-45 years. The diagnosis was done using Ober’s test and Noble’s compression test. Prasarini taila was used for massaging. Visual analog scale for pain assessment was used.
Results: Significant improvement was noted from 3rd day of assessment measured through Wilcoxon signed rank test. Greater level of improvement could only be assessed on 12th day onward. 80% of patients were male.
Discussion: There was no too much difference observed in 12th and 15th day. Proper way of massaging with specific ingredients was important in this case as massage with medicated oil is helpful in reducing pain through various mechanisms including biomechanical, neurological, physiological and psychological mechanisms.
Conclusion: Observed results exhibit the positive effects of Prasarini taila massage for 15 days for people suffering from iliotibial band syndrome.
