It is a perennial plant with stems up to 3 meters in length. Leaves are oblong to ovate-lanceolate in shape, 15-20 x 6-12 cm in size. Inflorescence is terminal, ellipsoid with bright red leathery bract. Calyx is red while corolla is white. Labellum is white and trumpet-shaped. Stamen is white with orange-yellow base. Capsules are red and globose. Seeds are black, glossy, 3mm across. Rhizome is used as anti-inflammatory in gout, rheumatism, asthma, bronchitis etc. It is also used as astringent, purgative, anthelmintic, antifungal etc.
