A Clinical Evaluation of Hartakyadi Lehya on Kaphaja Kasa

Abstract: Kaphaja kasa is one of Kasa caused by obstruction in circulation of vayu due to heavy foods’ intake, inactive lifestyle and over sleeping. Cough, sore throat, lack of appetite, sneezing etc. are signs and symptoms. Many of herbs or herbal formulations are indicated in Ayurveda for Kaphaja Kasa having inhibitory effects on cough reflex, mucolytic effects and immunomodulatory effects. Haritakyadi lehya is one of that with combination of of Haritaki, Bhumiamalaki, Amalaki, Bhadramusta and Pippali with honey.
Materials and Methods: The formulation was given to patients visiting OPD of ALNRMAMC hospital, Koppa. Patients were treated based on symptomatic criteria mentioned for Kaphaja Kasa. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were strictly followed. The drug was given thrice a day at dose of 3gm after meal. Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was used for statistical evaluation.
Result: Symptomatic reliefs were observed more evidently in cough, sore throat, sneezing and running nose. In all other taken parameters, patients reported reliefs, but still it was not completely up to standard.
Discussion: The constituent ingredients have compounds reported to work on Kaphaja Kasa by various mechanism as polysaccharides of Haritaki is proven cough relieving properties. Honey works on sore throat. Essential oil Bhadramusta is having antimicrobial activity.
